Your Lead Generation Is Probably Not the Problem
3 min read
In short
B2B lead generation is not about collecting as many contacts as possible. It is about identifying the right companies, finding the right decision-makers, and having a specific reason to contact them now.

Run this before you read anything else
Open your CRM, spreadsheet, or wherever you keep your prospects.
Pick the last 20 companies you contacted and answer three questions for each:
Why was this company a good fit?
Why was this the right person to contact?
Why did you contact them at that particular time?
If you cannot answer all three in one sentence, you probably do not have a lead generation problem.
You have a targeting problem.
What most companies call lead generation
A typical B2B lead list looks something like this:
Company name → Contact person → Email → LinkedIn
It feels productive.
You found 500 companies.
You found 500 decision-makers.
You sent 500 emails.
But a spreadsheet full of contacts is not a pipeline.
A lead only becomes interesting when there is a reason that company might actually buy from you.
The three things that matter
Good B2B lead generation comes down to three questions:
1. Is this the right company?
Not every company that could use your product is a good prospect.
Look for things like:
company size
industry
location
business model
current growth
technology they use
hiring activity
expansion
recent funding
problems your product actually solves
The goal is not:
“Who could possibly buy this?”
It is:
“Who has a problem we can realistically solve?”
2. Is this the right person?
Finding a company is only half the job.
You need to know who can actually influence or make the decision.
That might be a:
CEO
Head of Sales
Marketing Director
Operations Manager
Procurement Manager
And sometimes it is not the person with the most impressive title.
A company can be a perfect fit and still produce zero results if your message reaches someone who has no reason to care.
3. Why now?
This is the part that gets ignored most often.
Imagine you sell a service that helps companies recruit salespeople.
You could contact 500 companies that might need it.
Or you could find companies that are currently hiring five salespeople.
Same market.
Completely different outreach.
The second company has a reason to listen.
That reason is what makes the lead relevant.
This is where lead generation becomes useful
Think about the difference:
Bad targeting
“We help B2B companies grow. Would you be interested in a quick call?”
Better targeting
“Saw you're currently hiring three salespeople in Tallinn. If expanding the sales team is the priority, I imagine generating enough qualified opportunities is part of the equation too.”
The second message is not necessarily better because it is beautifully written.
It is better because there is a reason behind it.
The simple formula
Good B2B lead generation looks more like:
RIGHT COMPANY
↓
RIGHT PERSON
↓
RIGHT TRIGGER
↓
RELEVANT MESSAGE
↓
CONVERSATION
Not:
500 CONTACTS
↓
500 EMAILS
↓
“Why isn't anyone replying?”
What this means for the Estonian market
Estonia is a small market.
That can be an advantage.
You do not need millions of potential customers if you can identify the few hundred companies that actually fit what you sell.
But it also means bad targeting becomes very obvious very quickly.
If your total addressable market is relatively small, burning through irrelevant companies with generic outreach is expensive.
You only get so many good prospects.
So the question should not be:
“How many leads can we generate?”
It should be:
“How many of the companies we're contacting are actually worth talking to?”
We use the same thinking at Myralum
When we build a B2B lead generation system, we are not starting with a list of emails.
We start with the company.
What do they sell?
Who buys it?
Which companies fit?
Who makes the decision?
What is happening in that company right now?
And most importantly:
Why would they care about this conversation today?
Only then does the outreach make sense.
Because finding someone's email address is easy.
Finding a good reason to email them is the real work.
